Insulating Your Loft Efficiently
25% of heat in a home escapes through the roof. The best way to prevent this heat loss is by insulating the loft. Insulating your loft will result in increased levels of comfort and/or reduced fuel bills.
Facts and Figures:
- Cost £110 - £160 (DIY) £190 - £300 (contractor).
- Annual savings £60 - £70.
- Recommended depth of insulation in the loft is a minimum of 250 mm (10 inches).

Loft insulation is fairly simple to install yourself. You can buy the materials from most DIY stores and local building merchants. Manufacturers’ instructions on the material will explain how to do it but bear in mind the following:
1. Don’t stand on the ceiling sections in between the joists - otherwise you may end up in the room below!
2. Insulate over the joists as well as in between.
3. After being insulated, the temperature in the loft will drop so you need to lag the water tank and water pipes in the loft to prevent the water from freezing.
4. Wear a mask, rubber gloves, an overall and safety goggles to stop the materials irritating the skin and throat.
5. Make sure you leave plenty of ventilation in the loft to avoid condensation after the insulation has been fitted.
6. Don’t forget to insulate the loft hatch.
Note: If you have a flat roof, or a loft conversion, it is advisable to leave it to an approved contractor.
