A timber-frame building that is
insulated with straw has won a sustainability award in Wales.
Environment minister Jane Davidson awarded the Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales (CLAW) Sustainability Award for the Eco-building in Cwbran woend by the Torfaen council.
The highly insulated structure imagined by White Design is not only a low carbon and energy efficient building, but was also built using green building techniques.
Some 85 per cent of the materials from demolishing the previous building were recycled for the new one.
Local cedar was used for the external cladding and even a kitchen sink was recovered.
The building also features
water conservation rainwater harvesting to provide water for flushing the toilets.
It also features a
wind turbine and
photovoltaic panels to generate electricity.
Jane Davidson recently announced the agreement of a "green charter" signed by over 40 building groups and organisation in Wales.
Building companies, colleges and trade bodies have signed up to the commitment, including the Federation of Master Builders.
