Ground source heat pump project on renewables shortlist

Category: Heat and Hot Water Solutions (15.04.2009)

A firm that has installed a ground source heat pump and a heat recovery system in a golf course clubhouse has been shortlisted for a renewables award.

Specialist Mechanical Services of Broughty Ferry is among the finalists for an H&V News Award for 'Renewables Project of the Year', reports the Guide and Gazette.

The firm installed renewable heating and ventilation systems at the Castle course clubhouse.

"The heat pump system supplies underfloor heating throughout the clubhouse and strategically positioned fan coils around the public and staff areas to control a stable and comfortable environment for staff, visitors and golfers alike," explained the firm's Graeme Fox.

Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the ground through a network of underground pipes which can be laid out in a horizontal or vertical formation.

According to the Energy Saving Trust ground source heat pumps used to heat homes can cut carbon emissions by about 1.8 tonnes a year if they replace an oil system.
